3 music videos that interest me
The video for Pipes by Tom Milsom interests me with its lingering shots and complex mise en scene. Every shot in the video lasts for a prolonged time, this suits the tempo of the song especially at the beginning, if there were lots of jump cuts the flow of the video wouldn't work. It follows the conventions of the singer staring into the camera and singing but adds a different aspect as its not done in a way that feels like he knows this is for a music video, it half tells a story at the same time. The mise en scene of the video is eye catching and very interesting, but at the same time it isn't too bold and still suits the music. The main background sheets even though have lots of colour and designs are still not bright and bold, almost dulled down.
You are not a robot by Hoodie Allen combines two common aspects of most music videos which is either to tell a story or show the band/artist performing their work. By far the most obvious appeal of the video is the kids dressed up as robots chasing the singer, not usually seen in music videos, but it relates to the theme of the song. When he isn't singing the footage is in slow motion, this interests me as this isn't commonly used as it can disrupt the flow of the music video, however in this case it works and well and wouldn't be as good without it. Other than that this is a very conventional music video with singing in front of the camera with fast editing that follows the music.
Space Oddity originally done by David Bowie but now famously covered by Chris Hadfield is an incredibly interesting music video, it covers many conventional traits of music videos with its use of lens flares, still camera shots of the singer looking into the camera, showing an instrument solo and almost telling a story at the same time. No extreme camera angles used just plain shots to show the singer and his performance. Also it's the first music video to be shot in space.
